Nate Caplin
Nate Caplin is a digital media consultant and a master at getting outstanding output from Episode. His DVD, Complete Training for Telestream Episode, can make anyone an encoding pro in about four hours.
We asked Caplin to share his favorite tips for new users, and here's what he said.
Episode Tips
1. Don't Forget the Filters
Take time to optimize your video with Episode's excellent filters: Even pristine HD sources look better after encoding if you follow these steps: * Lower brightness and increase contrast to deepen the blacks. * Raise gamma to prop up the mid-tones. * Increase saturation to deepen colors. * Sharpen to highlight details.
Finally, don't forget to normalize the audio to ensure healthy volume levels.
2. Do More with H.264
Episode is great for encoding H.264 files that play in QuickTime and iTunes, as well as on iPods, iPhones, and Apple TVs. But now those same files work in Flash 9, too!
By using output dimensions of 640 x 480 or smaller with bitrates of 1.5Mbps or less, you can make one file for multiple uses. For the iPod/iPhone version, just change the .mp4 extension to .m4v, zip it, it and provide a download link. When users download it, the .zip will automatically uncompress, leaving the .m4v file on their desktop. That file will launch and import into iTunes when they double-click it.
