If you want to grab hold of the still-popular user-generated video trend for your site, there are a few things you should know before offering them. A new report spells out the obstacles and offers sterling advice.

Whether you want to create an entire area of your site devoted to user-generated videos or partner with an established UGV site, you need to understand who your audience is and what you stand to gain. A report from Jupiter Research titled "User-Generated Video on Mainstream Sites" helps people new to the area with these tips: 1. Understand UGV Popularity
While user-generated video is in the spotlight at the moment, it's not the most-watched type of online video. Music videos, movie trailers, and news clips are all watched more often.

2. Know the Audience
Before you begin offering UGV content on your site, you should understand who's watching it and use the content to target those groups. The Jupiter Research report found that viewers were more often younger (34 and under), male, and Asian-American or Hispanic.

3. Have Clear Goals
Sites that have launched successful UGV areas have typically done so to build up content (a library of online videos), create community among the site's members, and launch contests.

4. Weed through the Submissions
If you host UGV content, you're going to need to carefully weed through it to make sure that all of it is appropriate for your site. This is especially true for contest submissions, which need to reflect well on the brand being promoted.

"Firms seeking to harness [UGV] must be prepared for vastly varying quality, and a need to apply a firm editorial hand to weed out relatively few good submissions from many that may be distasteful, poorly filmed or encoded, or simply not in line with campaign goals or overall company branding," says the Jupiter Research report.
