Description:
On view through November 1, this exhibition in collaboration with the Zanesville Art Center and the Bowling Green State University Fine Arts Center Galleries features the work of famed Cleveland School ceramicist, Charles Lakofsky. Excerpted from catalog essay by Mark Bassett: Lakofsky's studio ceramics won numerous awards, and examples can be found in over twenty public collections, including the Art Galleries of Bowling Green State University, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Everson Museum of Art, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Smithsonian Institution, the Western Reserve Historical Society, the Wichita Art Association, and the Zanesville Art Center. A Cleveland native born in 1922, Lakofsky began his art education at West Technical High School, a school he chose because it offered coursework in art. Formal training then followed at the Cleveland School of Art, where Viktor Schreckengost was one of several noteworthy teachers and role models. In 1944, Lakofsky earned an art school diploma and also won an Agnes Gund traveling scholarship, enabling him to attend Alfred University, where at first he expected to concentrate on ceramic engineering. Instead, he fell in love with studio pottery-and kept that focus throughout his career. At the Cleveland Museum of Art, Lakofsky was a regular exhibitor at the annual May Show, just one indication that he considered himself a member of the Cleveland School long after settling in Bowling Green, 25 miles south of Toledo in northwest Ohio.
