Liposuction – A figure correcting procedure, not a weight reducing procedure

Liposuction is one of the most common procedures in cosmetic surgery in both men and women. There are generally different areas of concern in both sexes. Women generally have greater deposits of fat in the flanks, back, chest rolls, along the pelvis and inner thighs. Men generally complain of lower abdominal fat deposits. However, when we see, liposuction, it should be clearly understood to be addressing problems of figure correction only. At no moment of time, should we confuse liposuction with weight reduction procedure, otherwise there are bound to be disappointments. Weight reduction procedures are referred to as bariatric surgery, and include gastric banding and bypass surgery, which are performed by Surgical gastro-enterologists, and not Plastic Surgeons

The safe limits of amount of fat to be liposuctioned in between 3-5% of body weight. However with tumescent techniques, these percentages can be slightly exceeded, in view of the fact, that blood loss is significantly controlled by tumescence technique. However, the larger the liposuction, the larger is the amount of fluid injected, and there can be problems of fluid retention, collection of fluid in the lungs etc. So a delicate balance is to be maintained here.

Once we make an estimate of the amount of fat to be aspirated, it is essential to counsel the client realistically, as to how much is the expected gain going to be. Any unrealistic expectations need to be toned down at this stage itself. There are limitations as to the amount of fat that can be removed from any area, since we cannot change the bony structure of any person. Thus a person with a very heavy waist region and thighs, will need to know that fat jutting out at certain points can be suctioned, but lean and thin legs cannot be guaranteed. It always helps to show the client the kind of result that can be expected. It is better to forego surgery on someone who is unrealistic in his/her demands rather than to operated and then face loud music later on.

After a good liposuction, a patient can expect to lose about 3-4 kgs of weight. But what is more important is the improvement in girth measurement that occurs. This can be in the form of leaner inner aspects of the thighs, the pelvis will look better, and it is easier to wear trousers and jeans, that extra fist of fat no longer shows through. Similarly, it may be possible to wear tighter tops, since the side of the abdomen is now better contoured.

In summary, see liposuction as a procedure, where you will get a better body, not a lighter on. mail me on bodycontouring@hotmail.com for details
