Every conscientious dresser knows, the right combination of accessories makes an outfit go from goo to great. Well, it's not different with outdoor furniture, included the often overlooked patio umbrellas. Taken for granted as being just for protection from sun and rain, there's some easy steps one can take to jazz up these umbrellas and turn them into fun and eye-catching parts of your outdoor furniture set. Here are just a few ideas to help patio umbrellas bring a little extra panache to your next barbecue.

Umbrella Bases

Yes, these are a necessary part of the setup of patio umbrellas to keep them upright, but that does not mean they need be dull or an afterthought. Usually weighing between 20-70 lbs, umbrella bases come in a variety of materials, including but not limited to the following: aluminum, concrete, cast iron, polyresin and steel. Beyond that, they are usually shaped into a square or circular base, Designs range from the basic unadorned bases, to more ornate styles meant to emulate the look of old-fashioned compasses, foliage, or Greek-style sundials. In all, the designs are as endless as the companies that make them. Some fancier models even come with attached wheels, so umbrellas can be moved from place to place.

Lighting

Another popular addition to patio umbrellas is a little mood lighting. Whether your occasion calls for a romantic ambience, you're having a luau themed event, or you simply need some extra lighting on your deck or patio, these compact and cheerful lights make everyone happy. Within the general category of lighting, there are two main types generally seen on patio umbrellas. The first type of light attaches to the shaft of the umbrella, where one or multiple light bulbs splay outward from the center. These can be globe-shaped bulbs as seen on old-fashioned streetlamps, or the more traditional bulb covered by a lamp shade. A lamp shade tends to cast a softer as needed, while of course the more bulbs attached to the main umbrella, the more overall light there will be. On the other hand, consumers also have the option of a type of lighting that looks more like Christmas lights. These small bulbs are linked by a wire that runs down the individual spokes of the umbrella along the underside. Not only does this cast a soft, ethereal glow, but it also evokes a more festive ambiance.

Netting

Do you live somewhere hot and humid that's plagued by mosquitoes and other pests during the balmier months? Don't let bugs keep you inside. With specially designed netting for patio umbrellas, you can enjoy the outdoors without worrying about being bitten or having pests ruining your picnic. Traditionally made from polyester, these sheer nets drape down from the top of the umbrella to the base, where a heavier bottom border keeps it better in place. What that means is you can easily get out, but nothing can get in. Some models also include a zipper running from base to top so you don't have to stoop over to get out.

Covers

Not necessarily the most fun of accessories, purchasing a protective cover for outdoor patio umbrellas is a smart move. Though made from strong, yet flexible waterproof materials designed to withstand tearing, staining and molding from the elements, after a time even the sturdiest of materials will begin to break down. Rather than let umbrella tops fall into ruin, a simple cover made from extra strong vinyl and canvas weave will keep umbrellas protected through colder months and during storms. Remember, it's a lot easier and cheaper to replace a protective cover that falls apart than having to buy an entirely new umbrella.
