Large shelves can overwhelm a room if you aren't careful. If you want to change the décor in your room but are stuck with shelves that threaten to take over, consider these décor options. You can add decoration to large shelves even on a budget with these steps.

  1. Add some color. Make the shelves an artistic focal point in the room with a splash of color. For a room with white walls don't paint the shelves the same color in an attempt to blend with the wall. Instead, make a dramatic statement by painting the shelves a bright accent color to complement the rest of the room décor. A can of paint should only cost a few bucks.
  2. Add texture. There are several options for adding some texture to your shelves to make an architectural statement. Choose a thick elegant fabric, a soft ribbed fabric, or a bright floral or paisley fabric. Then wrap the fabric from the bottom of the shelf over and across the top. Use glue or staples to attach the fabric to the shelves. Fabric can be pricey but there are several options to cover the shelves for under twenty dollars.
  3. Display your art. Large shelves are a great place to display collections. If you collect figurines, glass bottle, old keys, drawings or any other type of art, put the collection together in one place on an oversized shelf. Buy matching frames at a crafts store then arrange the art onto the shelf in different sizes and angles. The shelf will help draw the collection together and make the collection the focal point of the room.
  4. Set a romantic mood with candlelight. Prepare the shelf by sanding or painting it to a smooth and shiny surface. Then place a row of candles in glass candle holders. When lit, the candles will create a warm glow that reflects off the gleaming surface of the shelf. The candles and holders can be purchased for about three dollars apiece or you can get a better deal if you shop thrift stores and clearance outlets.
  5. Clean out your closets. To make decorative repairs on a budget you can always clean out your own closets for materials and ideas. Collect magazines and catalogues for bright letters and images. Glue those images, any glitter or other elements to the shelf to create a collage. Then finish the collage with a coat of clear polyurethane. The shelves now make a statement about who you are and will become a great conversation starter whenever you need one.

Adding decoration to shelving or any other element of your home can be simple. All you need is some creative ideas and a few bucks and you can add decoration on any budget.
