Alternative treatments are making their way into the mainstream, and adults aren't the only ones who are using them: 8.5 million children under the age of 17 have used some form of nontraditional medicine, says a recent survey by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. "The smartest way to approach alternative medicine is to talk to your pediatrician about it so she can help you find the safest and least invasive options," says Timothy Culbert, MD, medical director of the Integrative Medicine Program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Research is most promising for:

Herbs A University of Missouri--Columbia study found that 75% of kids with irritable bowel syndrome who took peppermint oil capsules had less pain after two weeks.

Acupuncture Research from Children's Hospital Boston shows that 70% of kids who got acupuncture for various ailments, including migraines and endometriosis, Montefiore said they felt much better after eight sessions.

Massage therapyA 2008 Northwestern University study showed that when pediatric outpatients with chronic pain had massages, their levels of distress, pain, tension and discomfort, as well as their mood, greatly improved.

Biofeedback A 2006 University of Arizona study found that this technique, which helps you control body processes like muscle tension and breathing, helped relieve recurrent abdominal pain in children.
