1. Tank Size: The first thing you want to do before you buy decorations is to make sure you are aware of the size of your tank. If you are not sure, you can measure it, and a person at a pet store should be able to tell you how many gallons it is. This is an important fact to know before beginning to buy decorations.
   
   
2. Fish Size: Although this may seem silly, it is important to keep the size of your fish in mind when buying decorations. You can choose to get real live plants, but if you choose to do that, you will want to make sure that they are compatible with your fish. Some fish will destroy real plants. Fake plants, however, come in all styles and sizes. They also come in many different colors.
   
   If you have fish that are large and strong, you might want to consider plants that have weighted bottoms. These have large bottoms that have to be buried into the gravel, and make it a lot harder for the fish to pull up.
