Young babies grow really quickly so just remember that when purchasing clothes they will only be worn for a few weeks before your baby out grows them. So keep it simple and to the essentials. Remember to give all your baby's new clothes a wash before your little one arrives.

Clothing

This is only a guide - some of this will depend upon how often you wash clothes, and whether or not your baby tends to spit up or leak through their diapers. Check the labels to see if clothes can be easily washed and cared for. Only purchase clothes that are easy to clean.
  • 4-6 baby sleep bags or nightgowns. There are a variety of different styles. Choose ones that are easy to get on and off and that have either zips or snaps. These are really handy and it's a good idea to have a few on hand in larger sizes as your newborn baby will grow rapidly. Babies can sleep in these during the day and the night. Choose ones which are appropriate for the time of year. Winter sleep bags or nightgowns should be made of warmer material, whilst summer ones should be light weight for those hot summer nights.
  • 4-6 onesies.
  • 4-6 pairs of pants.
  • 4-6 long or short  sleeved body  suits (depending on season)  a newborn size. These are like little undershirts with snaps at the crotch. They're very practical as they can be worn with pants or underneath other clothing to keep baby warm. Your baby can also wear them to bed or as an extra layer under a sleep bag or nightgown at night.
  • 1-2 sweaters.
  • Winter coat and/or snowsuit (for winter)
  • 1-2 pairs of mittens (for winter or to stop baby scratching herself)
  • 5-7 pairs of baby socks or booties. Select socks that are easy to get on and off. You'll soon learn which brands stay on better than others. Ask other mothers if they know which ones stay on the best.
  • 3 or 4 newborn hats. These are important to keep your babies head warm as heat gets quickly lost through the head. Find ones that fit your baby's head snugly.
  • Shoes: newborn babies don't need shoes. Babies don't need shoes until they start walking.

    Diapers and Bath Items

    • 2 packs of disposable diapers (buy ahead of time when they're on sale) or enough cloth diapers for at least four days. Newborn babies can go through as many as 10 diapers a day!
    • 2-3 packs of disposable wipes or about 12 cloth wipes.
    • Changing Table - great to keep your diaper supplies organized in and for easy diapering. Check that the height of the table works well with your own height. You don't want one that is too high or too low for you.
    • Diaper changing pad (waterproof).
    • Baby bath
    • 4 washcloths
    • 2 hooded towels which are nice for keeping baby warm after a bath. You can also use adult towels if you wish.
    • 1 pair of nail clippers designed just for a baby.
    • Digital thermometer.
    • Baby shampoo, if desired.
    • 1 bar of soap or body wash which is designed for a baby's sensitive skin.
    • Diaper rash cream -Protective cream for when the inevitable diaper rash occurs.
    • Diaper Bag - look at all the styles available and select one that will easily accommodate all the supplies that you need to take with you. Some come with portable changing mats and lots of lovely separate compartments to organize all your diaper supplies in.

    Bedding

    • Crib.
    • Cradle, moses basket, or bassinet - choose what ever option is going to work best for you in the first months of life when it is easier to deal with all those nighttime feeds by having your baby sleep in the same room as you.
    • 3-4 fitted sheets for babies sleeping area (crib, cradle, or bassinet).
    • 6 swaddling blankets or stroller blankets for when you are out and about.
    • 10 burping cloths. Cloth diapers work great for this purpose.
    • 1 mattress protector to keep mattress protected from diapers leaking!

    Feeding

    • 8-10 bottles if you are bottle feeding.
    • 1 bristle brush to clean the inside of bottles.
    • Formula (there is a variety of choices here). Research this ahead of time so you can make an informed choice.
    • 1 breastfeeding pillow if you are breastfeeding
    • 3-4 nursing bras.
    • 5-7 pairs of cloth breast pads or 1 packet of disposable breast pads.
    • 1 very comfortable chair to feed in. This is actually a really important item to have as you will be spending quite a bit of time feeding your newborn baby. Make sure there is a little table next to the chair so you can have something to drink and read nearby while you are feeding. It's a good idea to have the phone handy on the table as well.
    • 3-4 Burp clothes

    Out and about

    • Stroller - choose a style which best suits your lifestyle. What's the point of having a jogging stroller if you never jog! Always take a stroller for a test drive in the store before you buy it. Some strollers are much easier to push around corners etc. than others.
    • Newborn car seat. Make sure this is properly installed before your baby is born. Many or most hospitals have this as a requirement before you are allowed to take your baby home from the hospital.
    • Sling or carrier (optional)
