Backup Generators Agoura Hills CA

When the electricity in your home fails (whether by lightning strike or brownout or some other reason), it is then that you may realize just how dependent our daily lives are on power. At best inconvenient, at worst dangerous and expensive, power failure can happen to almost anyone and can be difficult to predict. Fortunately, it is not difficult to prepare for such an event happening to you. Emergency backup generators are designed to prevent problems associated with an electrical outage.

2 . Why Have a Backup Generator?

Much of our daily life depends on electrical power. Lights, heat, appliances, and other things that we take for granted can disappear in a power outage. If the power outage is brief, the loss of electricity may be little more than a nuisance. However, an outage can last for days; unless you are able to take the necessary precautions, the lack of electricity could lead to expensive damage such as spoiled food, frozen water pipes, flooding in basement areas (due to sump pump failure) and general discomfort due to the unavailability of running water and heat.

In certain areas, power outages may be seasonal, coming with lightning storms, floods, or heavy snow. People living in areas with these possible dangers might consider purchasing a permanent standby generator. On the other hand, if such risks are less common, a smaller portable generator may be the more cost-effective option. The homeowner’s responsibility is to determine whether the economic and physical damage of a power outage is something he can afford. A powerful standby generator might be the best option if the loss could be too high. A portable generator might be sufficient if the loss would be negligible.

3 . What Do Generators Cost?

Depending on the type and model you purchase, backup power generators can cost anywhere between $600 and over $20,000. The wide range of prices indicates the variety of available generators. The smallest and least expensive portable generators are enough to power a few appliances in your home for short amounts of time. These models are usually fairly light and small, making them easy to store when not in use. The price range for portable models is usually at the less expensive end of the spectrum. Larger portable models and permanent standby models are usually more expensive and usually provide power for longer periods.

In general, most portable generators retail for less than $3,000, and most standby generators retail for over $4,000 and can even exceed $20,000 in the top models. A good rule of thumb is that it costs between $300 and $500 per kW of power. One option available to homeowners is renting the generator. This can be a cost-effective means of guarding against power outages, especially if such outages are predictable (such as those occurring with seasonal storms). Some generators are available for as little as $75 per day. These portable generators should provide ample electricity to run a few necessary household appliances until power is restored.

Finally, since most generators operate on diesel or gasoline, you will have to take the cost of fuel into account. In a major power outage, fuel availability may suddenly drop, so it may be wise, depending on your personal circumstances, to have enough fuel stored for later use. Remember that if you store fuel for a long period of time, it may not be as viable as when you bought it, so it can be beneficial to replace your stores periodically (including any fuel in the tank of the generator itself). These costs should be factored into your final costs of owning and maintaining the generator. Diesel, natural gas, and propane generators are more efficient and will last longer than gasoline generators, but they are usually more expensive. As always, the homeowner must make the determination of what kind of generator is best suited for his purposes.

4 . Portable or Permanent Generators

Portable generators are designed to be moved to various locations, so you can select the best place to run your generator. This also means you can take it to a work site or power different buildings depending on your current needs. Portable generators offer flexibility and lower cost, although they usually do not provide the same power output as larger, permanent generators. For smaller homes, they are often the best option, especially if you have few appliances that need to continue to function (such as the sump pump, or refrigerators containing perishable food). Always exercise caution that you do not overload your generators; portable generators usually produce less power than permanent standby generators, so this is particularly important if you have several appliances you wish to operate.

Permanent backup power generators are usually installed somewhere in or around a home, and are wired into the electrical system of the building. Permanent generators must have good ventilation for the exhaust fumes, and should be checked to make sure they are properly wired to the house. The advantage of permanent generators over portable ones is that they usually produce more power and usually last longer. In addition, they usually run longer for a single tank of fuel than portable generators, since they often have a larger fuel tank.
