(NC)-"I think I've caught a 'bug'." Is a common enough statement, especially during winter months when colds and the flu seem to be quite common. But what kind of bug is it? If you don't know, will you be able to get your health back quickly? And what about prevention?

The common cold is caused by a virus, rhinovirus to be exact, and it CANNOT be killed by antibiotics - they kill bacteria.

Viruses are tiny structures, 10,000 times smaller than bacteria, seen only with an electron microscope! A virus can only reproduce inside a living cell where it takes over the resources of the host cell and begins to produce more virus particles. Viruses are so simple they are technically not even alive. They are more like mini-robots than living things and their sole purpose is to reproduce. Once a virus finds a suitable host cell it attaches to the surface of the cell or is pulled into the cell by a process called 'phagocytosis' (phago - eat; cyto - cell). Inside it releases its genetic material and shuts down normal cell processes, using the cell's energy and materials to make copies of the original virus, virtually cloning itself. It fills the host cell with viruses until it ruptures, releasing these to infect nearby cells. This is why super viruses are such a frightening concept. But you CAN protect yourself naturally.

A strong immune system is the best protection against viruses, and the best way to strengthen your immunity is through healthy eating, drinking plenty of water, supporting your body with exercise and adequate sleep. Scientists have developed a concentrated extract of echinacea called Echinilin, and it has been proven in clinical trials to stimulate the immune system and triple the speed of recovery from a common cold.
