While you may think that all that licking keeps your kitty clean, there are still times that a cat needs a bath. The idea of mixing water with sharp claws and kitty teeth may be scary but never fear. You can bathe a cat. Just follow these instructions.

  1. Get organized. Before you start the bath make sure it is as efficient as possible by gathering everything you need and having the water ready before you start hunting for the cat. If possible, find someone to help and make sure you are both prepared. Gather the soap, comb or brush and washcloth. It also helps to have a large plastic cup handy for when you rinse the cat. It’s easier to pour the water than attempt to dunk the feline. Gather several towels for drying as well.
  2. Dress appropriately. You should be able to avoid most scratches by donning long sleeves and jeans. Cover your skin and pull your hair away from your face so the cat cannot dig deep if they do strike out at you.
  3. Fill the tub with four inches of water. Try for a warm bath but not hot. The cat will climb up your face in a flash if the water is cold so try for slightly warmer than room temperature.
  4. Calmly locate the cat. Cats are not stupid and they are practiced at the game of stalking, so don’t attempt to sneak up on the furry feline. Instead speak calmly to the cat, like you would if you were setting out his or her dinner.
  5. Grasp the cat. Grab the cat firmly at shoulders with one hand and at the hips with the other hand. Pull the cat in closely and hold him close to you with the sharp claws facing away from you.
  6. Slowly place the cat into the water. Wet the body fur from the neck down. Hold the legs firmly because the cat will be squirming and kicking. If you have a friend helping you, then now is the time. Ask your partner to help with step seven. Keep your strong hold on the cat while your friend does the washing.
  7. Loosen the back legs and pour on some soap. Gently wash the soap into the cat’s fur along the back then under the belly.
  8. Rinse the cat. Hold firmly while pouring warm water over the cat to rinse out the soap.
  9. Use towels to rub dry. Wrap a towel around the cat’s body then use a second towel to dry. With the first towel wrapped around the cat you should be able to towel him off without getting scratched. As soon as the drying is done, release the cat and let him run and hide. Your cat may be gone for a while but let him be. He wants to recover from the trauma of the bath.

When your cat gets so dirty or muddy that he cannot keep himself clean, you will need to bathe him. Follow these steps and you can bathe the cat without causing too much harm to yourself.
