(NC)—Temperatures are on the rise and there is no better way to escape the scorching rays of the sun then by taking a dip in your backyard swimming pool. While most local homeowners have opened their backyard pools for the season, just as many are preparing for the bombardment of daily visitors, old and young, who will also seek refuge from the heat.

But as a homeowner, you have the responsibility to provide a safe environment for children and adults alike whether it's your in-laws, neighbours or friends' children. In fact, each year many children drown or are involved in near-drowning accidents in residential pools across Canada.

“Safeguarding your swimming can easily ensure the safety of your family and guests this summer,” says Stefanie Hay, insurance and claims expert with Aviva Canada. “While it's not required by law in all provinces, pools should be fenced in on all sides and equipped with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Stressing the importance of adult supervision, “Never leave a child unattended in and around the pool for any reason. Drowning can occur in seconds without noise or signs of struggle.” Hay adds that while most homeowner's insurance policies cover outdoor swimming pools, check with your insurance broker or company to ensure you are covered.

By following these additional safety precautions, you too can relax poolside worry free:

1. Ensure all children under the age of three and children who cannot swim are wearing a life jacket or personal floatation device

2. Don't rely on swimming lessons or "floaties" to protect your children in the water

3. Keep lifesaving equipment and a first-aid kit handy

4. Post emergency phone numbers at the telephone closest to the pool

5. Never allow anyone who has been drinking alcohol to use the pool
