There are two standard types of estimates from moving companies: binding and non-binding. The cost of your moving company will be based on several factors: the weight of the goods being moved, the distance those goods will travel and the services (such as packing, or storage) that you require. If you're shopping for a professional household goods carrier, get estimates from at least 3 companies.

Non-binding estimates are just that: they do not bind the carrier. They are intended to be reasonable approximations of the cost of your move, but the actual amount you're charged may well be higher or lower. The cost must, however, be in line with the mover's published tariffs and the actual weight of your shipment.

The non-binding estimate should be in writing and it should describe the services being provided and the goods to be moved by any of the moving companies you hire. Ensure that this cost estimate appears on the Order for Service and the Bill of Lading.

Make sure that you fully understand the terms of the non-binding estimate of the moving company, and know when you're required to pay the amount estimated and any additional costs incurred. For interstate moves, the mover can require you to pay the full amount of the original non-binding estimate, and up to 10 percent more, at the time of delivery. You have longer to pay any remaining charges. However, if you have added on more work for the mover, beyond that included in the original documentation, the mover has the right to require full payment for those additional services at the time of delivery.

Be very clear as to the cost of any additional services you request, and the terms of payment, before you commit any moving company.

Binding estimates bind both the moving companies and you. The mover is bound to provide the specified services at the agreed price. You're obligated to pay that amount at the agreed time. However, be sure that all the services to be performed and all the goods to be moved are included in the agreement. If you add work to the move by increasing the size of the shipment or if the mover finds difficulties at the destination which weren't known or disclosed when the estimate was made (such as problems unloading the goods - stairs, restricted elevator access, etc.) you will incur additional charges.

A binding estimate will be detailed and take some time to prepare. Carriers are permitted to charge for the preparation of such an estimate. Ask what the charge will be before directing a mover to go ahead and write one up. Click on the link below to find moving companies in your area.
