When your favorite bra has lost its snap, it's time to go shopping.
"But don't assume you're the same size you always were. Having kids, losing or gaining weight and exercising can change your shape," says Pattie Ficorilli, director of merchandising services with Maidenform Inc. Here's how to find the perfect bra:
• Average-sized women can wear any style, but fuller breasts need underwires (skip demi cups or half-cups, which don't offer sufficient support).
• Straps should be comfy; they're designed to stabilize the bra, not hold everything up. If they're digging into your shoulders, you need a different style with deeper cups.
• Make sure hook-and-eye closures are covered with fabric so they don't rub against your skin.
• Do a mirror check. If you're spilling out the top or sides, try a larger cup size.
• Always try before buying; even the same style in another color may fit differently because dyes can stiffen fabric.
