Originally published at Internet.comIn light of the energy concerns in the United States (particularly in California), companies are taking steps toward conservation while also making arrangements to protect valuable data.
Here are some techniques you can institute on a company-wide level to conserve energy resources: * At the end of the business day, turn off unused computers, monitors, printers, copiers, lights, fax machines and other plug in devices. Only leave on appliances or equipment that require a constant power source.
* Employees should set the automatic timer and standby options on their computers.
* Allow employees to work from home if possible. With gasoline prices rising rapidly, telecommuters can keep some extra money in their pockets while also reducing pollution.
* Use efficient light bulbs rather than high wattage, energy-eating ones and encourage natural light through windows when possible. However, windows that are exposed to direct sunlight should be covered with curtains or blinds.
* If private offices are individually climate controlled, make sure units are turned off when the room is vacant.
* Institute four-day work weeks if possible. Closing the business for an extra full day each week could drastically reduce energy usage and save money too.
* Encourage carpooling and attempt to match employees from neighboring locations. Create an interactive map in a community area where staff can locate nearby commuters.
E-businesses are especially vulnerable during energy shortages and blackouts because of the heavy reliance on electricity. Your business data could be the most valuable resource you own so you should take steps to protect it: * Back up data on a regular basis. This is crucial!
* Backed up data should be stored off site. This is to avoid losing everything if there is a fire at your business location.
* Run reports and back ups during off-peak energy usage hours.
* Remind employees to save documents as they work. In the event of a power outage, all work won't be lost.
Instituting some of these energy conservation habits should result in a significant cost savings too.
