Determine size and location

After you figure out the dimensions you want for the island, make a template out of cardboard. Reposition the template on your kitchen floor until you find the perfect location.

Make sure there is enough space between the island and other cabinets and appliances for doors to open freely.

When you decide the island’s exact location, place masking tape on the floor around the corners of the template to map out the design.

Arrange cabinets

If you bought cabinets, use the tape marks to arrange them according to your design.

Attach cabinets

If you are using more than one cabinet, align them so the face frames are flush with each other. Then attach a clamp just below the first cross bar to hold them together.

Attach a second clamp below

Permanently attach the cabinets with screws driven through the adjoining face frames.

Attach cabinet backs

Because these cabinets will be freestanding, instead of against a wall, you will need to attach them at the back as well. If there is a gap between the cabinets, insert a spacer, then attach backs with screws.

Cover backs and sides with paneling

Measure and cut the paneling to the correct size and put glue to the back of the paneling and along the edges of the cabinets. Make sure the paneling is flush with the cabinet’s edges.

Attach the paneling with a nail gun every six inches. Then conceal the nail holes with a wax pencil designed for prefinished paneling.

Add trim and base molding.

Install countertop

Place a butcher-block countertop on the cabinets. Attach the countertop to the cabinets from below with screws.

Install lighting

Make sure there is enough lighting for the island to make working at the new space comfortable.

Quick tips to freshen up your kitchen

Install new cabinet harware One of the easiest ways to update the look of a kitchen is to put on new, more modern-looking handles, knobs and hinges.

Paint the cabinets Much cheaper than installing new cabinets, painting can spruce up any wooden cabinets. Clean cabinets to get rid of any grease. Sand to score the old surface, then apply primer. Use semi gloss kitchen paint to make the cabinets stand out and make them easier to clean.

Flooring Get rid of that dated vinyl or linoleum flooring and install hardwood, laminate or ceramic tiles.

Knock out a wall Take down a free-standing wall between a family room or dining room halfway or entirely for a more open living space. If you take the wall halfway down, put a countertop on and place stools around it for an eating area.

Install a backsplash Make your kitchen more interesting visually by putting a backsplash above countertops and the stove. Decorative tiles in a wide variety of colors and designs are available so you can create your own special look.
