Hamilton Carhart had a vision long ago that is still going strong today. The founder of the Carhartt Company was born in New York in 1855. He was raised in southern Michigan where he began his quest for perfection in outerwear for the average worker. An extra “T” was added to his last name to make up the unique name of his company to help it stand out as different in special in a world where the type of garments he was producing were not available. The first buyer he had helped him to see how specialty products would be the best thing to offer the other customers he would have through the years. Hamilton began to talk to and create the Carhartt coats and other outerwear required for the railway workers to perform their job but also meet their needs for warmth and comfort.

Vision In The Making

A few years later, the Carhartt Company was birthed. Production on the Carhartt coats and overalls began as well as other famous pieces for the average worker. These beautifully crafted apparel pieces showed not only durability but also an e3xzcellence and standard that set the stage for things to come. The first set of overalls created was crafted from duck cotton fabric which is unique to Carhartt coats and other pieces. It allows for breathability of the skin but keeps the moisture out. Traveling from town to town, Hamilton's garments gained a reputation for being the best. He continued to talk to the railway workers to find ways to improve what he had already begun.

Troubled Times

The depression brought hard times for everyone including Carhartt plants and mills. Once the war was over, only three plants were still producing his wonderful Carhartt coats and other pieces for the public. After a collaborative campaign between his some and Hamilton, the main offices moved to Irving Kentucky. They are still there now. Across the United States, Canada, and Europe, there are seventeen plants and three mills running today. The special fabric made for the Carhartt coats and other items is milled special for the company to use.

Times Past

Hamilton died in 1937. This was just seven years after the Great Depression caused him so much rebuilding and trouble. He lived to be 82 years of age. His family decided to carry on the great tradition of creating Carhartt coats and other outerwear products for the protection and warmth of the general public. The reputation he started over a hundred years ago is still alive and very much considered the best of any other producer of outerwear.

Quality Standards

Today you can still find the multitudes of styles and garment types to include high quality Carhartt coats. Each piece is still made to withstand the worst of weather and elements. They are made to help you work through the harshest winds, the pouring rain, and the coldest snowfall. Hamilton Carhart was out to help a few railway workers when he created his exquisite pieces but instead ended up helping the world.
