2. Caulk

The chemical DNA of caulk is what makes it so versatile. It is a product that can be used for almost anything needing a hole, crack, or small gap filled to prevent further damage. Just as humans all have unique DNA, so does this product. It can be used to seal the rim of a kitchen sink to prevent water seepage from compromising the strength of the countertop, it can be used as an adhesive to aid in the application of mirrors to a wall and it can also be used as a sealant around windows to help insulate a home.

Caulk also comes in many different colors and can be used to blend two different colored industrial floor tiles to make a smooth transition between the two. The benefit of different colors is also realized in surface preparation for painting or to simply hide a crack in a finished surface. Some of its application calls for a silicone base, which is usually used to seal around areas needing protection from some other element.

Other uses for caulk include bathtubs where they meet the wall, around the floor of a toilet to seal it from cleaning chemicals, and also for the vanity top where it meets the wall. To help the painter, it comes in a grade specifically made for paints and is usually one of the last steps in preparation for paint.

3. Siding

The use of it for siding purposes is also wide and varied. The important thing about siding is to know what kind of siding the caulk is being applied to and whether or not it is going to be the best procedure for the siding. Some siding is made of masonite and should not have caulk on the flat surface as a patch or filler because it does not hide behind paint on this particular surface. A paint grade caulk can be used on the area where the siding overlaps and meets the one beneath it. However, if a surface patch is required on masonite siding it is recommended that a wood filler be used such as spackling compound.

Wood siding can also be difficult to patch with caulk on a flat surface. Painter’s caulk can be used in cracks and seams, but patching a small hole such as a nail hole should be filled with something other than caulk. Even the paint grade caulk will show in a hole or surface patch because of the shrinkage factor in the drying process of caulk. Using caulk for the edge where wood siding overlaps will work due to the nature of the seam. Another area where caulk will work well on siding is where the siding meets windows and doors.

4. Windows and Doors

These areas are unique because of the cuts required to make the siding look uniform as it meets the windows and doors of a house. Caution is advised in the amount of caulk used in these areas and to be certain that the caulk line is smooth and error free. The areas where the siding meets the windows and doors of a house are like a picture frame and can be seen without really having to focus on them. Any bumps in the caulk can cause paint to run, or if the caulk is being used as a sealer anything not conforming to the frame look of a window and door will be readily seen without much effort.

To keep siding as beautiful and complimentary as possible, it is recommended that consumers make a few practice runs on some scrap lumber somewhere to get a good feel for the application process. One thing to keep in mind when applying caulk to siding is that the type of siding on the house will play a large role in the process used to make a smooth looking bead. For example, when applying it to wood siding use a paint grade caulk and a wet finger to smooth the bead out for painting. When applying the caulk around windows and doors it may be difficult to get a finger into the tight spot between trim. If this is the case, a slotted screwdriver is one option available for smoothing the bead. Always keep plenty of paper towels handy to keep fingers or smoothing tools clean. It also helps to keep a small container of water handy as painter’s caulk is readily cleaned with water.
