The state of a sink is a big indicator of the cleanliness of any home so begin and end your weekly housekeeping with a clean sink. Keep your sink from being just a catch-all for dirty dishes and sponges and by following these steps to clean a sink.
1. Choose your cleanser. Sinks are available in several types of materials, several of those require special cleansers so you don't scratch or mar the surface. Check your sinks manufacturer for the best cleaners to use. As a general rule of thumb avoid abrasive cleaners if your sink is acrylic, stainless steel, fiberglass or marble. Select the cleanser that works best for your sink material. If you have sensitive hands make sure you grab some gloves and soft sponges. If you want to avoid harsh chemicals and get a good scrubbing agent that can naturally remove odors consider using baking soda as your cleanser.
2. Clean out the sink.
Get the dishes that have been piling up or any hand-wash soaking laundry out of your sink. Start with an empty sink so you can get the surface clean.
3. Rinse with warm water.
Rinse the sink to loosen and soap scum and grime. Pay attention to any stains or rust spots.
4. Scrub away stains.
Use your cleanser and sponge to scrub the sink. Follow the directions on your cleanser. Some require that you put the chemical directly onto the stain and let it soak in before scrubbing. Others suggest that you put the chemical onto a sponge then scrub as you apply the chemical to the stain. Remember that if your faucet is plated you need to check to make sure the cleanser is safe for both the sink and the hardware.
5. Rinse thoroughly.
Use a sprayer or cup of warm water to rinse all sides of the sink as well as the lip around the top of the sink and the faucet.
6. Dry the sink with a clean cloth.
Choose a soft, clean cloth and wiped the sink dry. Water droplets left to stand might leave small stains so make sure you dry the sink after cleaning.
7. Keep the sink clean.
Once you have cleaned your sink you need to maintain that cleanliness every time you use it. Don't let dishes stack up in the sink. Rinse and put them in the dishwasher each day. Then wipe the sink down with dish soap and a sponge and dry it each night. This should keep your sink clean and sanitary between regular cleanings.
Your sinks are a catch all for dirty dishes, clothes and whatever germy things you put in them. So keep your home and family safe by giving your sinks a good cleaning every week or two.
