Does thinking about spring cleaning your kitchen get you down? If just looking at the cooktop and range makes you want to procrastinate another week or month, don't worry, you are not alone. Cleaning a cooktop can be daunting especially if it's been a while since the last cleaning. If you follow these steps you can clean and maintain a cooktop so it no longer seems daunting.

  1. Know the type of cooktop. There are several types of cooktops and the material of the cooktop determines the cleaning process. A smooth glass cooktop will require different cleaning than enamel or coil ranges. Check your manual for guidelines about cleaning your cooktop.
  2. Remove loose crumbs. Regardless of the type of cooktop you should be able to use a warm, damp sponge to wipe the cooktop to remove any loose crumbs. The cooktop should be wiped down as soon as a spill happens so that the food doesn't harden or stain.
  3. Remove knobs and coils. For your periodic and thorough cleaning, remove the coils, knobs and any other loose parts to clean. Clean each part and then wipe under and behind where they go. A lot of crud can build up behind your knobs and under the coils.
  4. Raise cooktop (optional). Some cooktops offer the option to raise the cooktop so you can clean underneath. If you've never checked this option for your range you might be surprised at what has been building up underneath the cooktop. Take the time to thoroughly clean this area.
  5. Reassemble and wipe down. Once you have cleaned any loose parts and coils, put the cooktop back together. Then use a soft sponge and recommended cleaner for a final wipe down so that the surface is clean and sanitary for your next use.

The cooktop should be wiped down after every use and thoroughly cleaned at least once a year or after any big spills. Take the time to clean the cooktop and your kitchen will sparkle.
