Get the most for your clothing dollar by checking for these five signs of good quality.

Eye the pattern "Look at the fabric to see if the patterns line up at the seams," says professional stylist Alison Deyette, founder of AliOnTheGo.com. "If they don't, it's a sure sign of poor craftsmanship."

Check the stitching to see that it lies flat. Any puckering or bumpiness is a red flag of hasty sewing.

Look under the buttons to see if they're snugly reinforced with loops of thread.

If a piece you like has a zipper, try it a few times. If properly attached, it will zip smoothly. If it's sewn too close to the fabric, it will catch and snag.

Well-made clothes have a wide, even hem, so that alterations can be made easily. "Try on everything to make sure the hem is sewn straight all the way around," says Deyette. "Poorly made clothes often have a crooked hem."
