While in college, many young adults choose to get by with the bare minimum. This usually includes going to class, completing assignments on time (or a day or two late) and spending their free time at parties or out on the town. While this may have become the widely accepted college experience, among college students that is, some students choose a more productive route. Job recruiters often become bored with college applicants, as many look the same and having that something extra on one's resume can help to separate them from the rest of the applicants.

A popular way to making oneself stand out among the rest is by finding an internship college campus recruiters will be impressed by. This is often more challenging than one may expect when first taking on the task. Many internships can be simply defined by filing, data entry, filing, getting coffee and filing. These are tasks that have to get done within the company, but nobody really wants to do, so they shovel the work on top of the new intern. While this type of internship is better than no internship, the intern does not really learn anything about the business world or even the real world for that matter besides maybe how to make the best cup of coffee in the office. Finding an internship college peers can be jealous of is difficult, but possible.

Many do not consider smaller businesses when finding an internship. Small businesses do not have the networking power that most large corporations have, but learning from the ground up is more valuable than one may think. When thrust into a large corporation, many may feel lost or confused as to what is actually going on within the business. From the seemingly pointless forms to the jockeying for new positions and titles among coworkers to the daily monotony that lingers throughout the office, large businesses may not teach a young college student much in their internship college opportunity. Small businesses, however, allow for the student to take on more responsibility because of the smaller number of employees that work for the company. The less the number of employees, the more responsibility each member of the team must take on, including the new intern.

Finding an internship college that teaches a student the basics of business may be the perfect opportunity for a student looking to get real world experience and learn a little bit about the business world as well. After all, regardless of one's industry, the entire world relies on business. Learning the basics before being thrust into a more complicated role will become very valuable as one embarks on their career. Even if 'the basics' are not part of a job description, having that background to build upon is always a good thing. Every house needs its foundation to stand and the same is true for one's career. Having a background that includes business and real life experiences allows for college students to gain valuable knowledge that will help them in their future career, but also helps them land a job that allows them to take their first step in their career.
