One of the joys of moving into a new home is the chance to design a personal space that reflects your own style. This joy might turn to discomfort when suddenly faced with several new rooms of blank walls. Never fear because below there are several tricks to pick color schemes for a new home.

  1. Assess what you have. Unless you are starting your decorating entirely from scratch you already have furniture and décor pieces that you will be using in the home. Before you start putting paint on the walls or changing the flooring, take a good look at what you have. Draw a floor plan of your new home identifying each room and what you will put in there. Now is the time to decide if your calm, pale blue bedding will stay in the master bedroom or if you want a change. Make the decisions about what art and furnishings you already own will be placed into each space. This is the starting point of your design.
  2. Get some ideas. The popularity of home decorating television shows, magazines and websites is advantageous for anyone looking for decorate a home. Even those starting from scratch with no furniture or décor will be able to get ideas. Start making lists of what you see that you like and that you don't like. If possible tear the pages out of a magazine and print the designs off websites so you can build a collection of the designs you love.
  3. Determine the goal of your decorating scheme. Believe it or not decorating can have a goal. Whenever you pick a style for your home you are announcing something about yourself and your family to the world. A dramatic and different style in each room indicates either you are creative and versatile or flighty and confused. The difference between the two can be small. Similarly if you choose a country blue and cow theme for your entire home, you might be going a little overboard announcing your likes to the world. Spend some time thinking about what you want your home to say about you before you start putting it together.
  4. Find the drama. In each room there should be a statement piece. In some rooms this will be a dramatic or deep wall color. In others it will be a stately fireplace, dramatic window treatments, elegant sofa, trendy table or your favorite art displayed on the wall. For each room choose the single piece that will make the statement. If your furniture celebrates the neutral and your art is classic black and white, then your walls will need to be the color spotlight.
  5. Select the paint. Choosing paint colors for walls and ceilings is the final step in determining a color scheme, not the first. Head to the store with an idea of a color family that will complement your other décor. If you've decided that the paint on the walls will be your dramatic statement then you will still have to decide if the statement is best made with a deep chocolate brown or a pale yellow. Color is up to you it just needs to complete the décor in the room. Once you know the color family, pick up several samples in that same color. If you are going with a neutral you will still need to select samples of the same color because shades and tints can vary greatly. Take the samples home and place them on the wall. Live with them a few days or even weeks until you know which shade works best in the room.

Picking a color scheme can be overwhelming but keep in mind, if you hate it, you can always repaint. Plan ahead for your design and you will be able to select the best color scheme to suit the mood and personality of your new home.
