CommNet is an integrated modem dial-up and telnet client for Windows. It's one of the few telnet clients available that offers full support for Zmodem transfers. Zmodem support allows files to be uploaded and downloaded from a local site while in a telnet session, effectively eliminating the need for a separate FTP client in some cases.

For those looking for a bit more security when telnetting, Radient Software offers a companion client, Secure CommNet. The $39 Secure CommNet adds Secure Shell (SSH2) support with six types of encryption algorithms: AES256, Twofish, Blowfish, Triple-DES, Arcfour, and Cast-128.

Both CommNet and Secure CommNet sport toolbar buttons for launching auxiliary applications, including Write, Notepad, Explorer, and a DOS session. The newer releases also allow you to modify this toolbar by adding your own apps. The clients also offer customizable Sound Effects for users equipped with sound cards.

Another cool feature is the ability to launch multiple telnet sessions and a single dial-up session concurrently. TTY, VT100, VT220, and full-color PC ANSI and SCO ANSI terminal emulation types are currently supported by both CommNet and Secure CommNet.

Overall

Overall, CommNet and Secure CommNet are two of the better telnet clients currently available. The ability to send and receive files from within a telnet session, as well as being able to quickly launch auxiliary apps on command are excellent features that help set the clients apart from most of the competition. And for those looking for the highest in security, Secure CommNet is sure to please.

For the many users still looking for the quintessential telnet client, do yourself a big favor and make sure you check out CommNet and Secure CommNet.
