Steps

  1. Gather your equipment. Before you start, you will need to know what you have available. You can use a wide variety of things to decorate your shoes. If you feel you need extra stuff, a good craft shop will stock most of the things you want.
  2. Plan your designs. Decide what you want on your shoes. If you use paint or fabric pens, you won't really be able to change it later, so think carefully. Try sketching your ideas on a piece of paper and try out different techniques on a scrap bit of fabric.
  3. Draw an outline. When you know what you want on your trainers, use a pencil to very lightly sketch the different areas of your design. Only draw the basic patterns- leave the details for later.
  4. Fill in the outline. This is where your fabric paints/pens come in. Carefully colour the areas within your outlines. When these parts are completely dry, add detail and outlines if you want.
  5. Add the finishing touches! If you want to use "extras" (glitter, sequins, etc.), then now is the time to do that. Make sure all the paint/ink is dry before adding these. Things like safety pins, badges etc can also add a touch of punk to your shoes if desired.
