Crate training is one of the most popular dog training methods used today, particularly for housebreaking puppies. However, crate training is much more than just a housebreaking technique, but one that teaches your dog basic obedience and makes him easier to travel with.

Many dog trainers utilize crate training as the basis of their dog training techniques. Many trainers also do not even consider another form of housebreaking, as there are several reasons that dog owners should avoid puppy pads and paper training. The downside to using paper training and puppy pads in your dog training is that they make it difficult for the dog to transition to using the bathroom outdoors. These dog training methods teach the dog that it is okay to relieve themselves in the house as long as they do it on paper or plastic and this means that your newspapers,
magazines, paperwork, mail and other paper items are not safe if your dog has access to them.
When you are selecting a crate for your dog training, you want one that will fit your puppy when it grows to an adult. Puppies grow quickly, so it’s more economical for you to select a large crate and block it off for the size of the puppy now rather than buy four or five crates for each stage in the dog’s development. You can block off a very large crate with boxes to make the crate an appropriate size. This is important because if the puppy is in a very large crate, he will be able to use the bathroom in one corner and then sleep on the other side. By blocking it off, you will avoid this. This is important because it is detrimental to your dog training if the puppy learns that he can use the bathroom in his crate.

When using a crate in your dog training, the puppy will need to spend as much time as possible in the crate. The puppy should only come out to use the bathroom, eat and exercise. This does not necessarily mean that your puppy will be in its crate 24/7 because you will be spending a lot of time with your dog outside of the crate. However, when the dog is not being trained, exercised, eating or sleeping then the dog will be in the crate.
Crate training not only teaches the puppy bladder control, but it also provides them a place where they feel safe and secure. Puppies are raised in a den in the wild and their crate serves as this den for them. As the dog gets older, they will be able to spend fewer amounts of time in the crate and will be more trustworthy when they are able to move about the home freely. Your dog will also be comfortable in the crate and will make him easier to travel with either by car or plane.
