Description:
Ron Wanger, director of Royal Ridges Ranch, and Burt Waugh Jr. announce a grand opening of the home at 19600 Gabriel Rd, Yacolt. We provide a housing and work training program for homeless youth, at the house and the Royal Ridges Retreat in Yacolt. In Clark County, as elsewhere, our foster care system ages out young people at 18. If they are not adopted by their foster parents, then most support stops, or in many cases, they cannot even continue to live in the home, if other foster children are still present. This "aging out" creates a situation which, in many cases, leads to the homelessness of the young person. This is especially true for those who are emotionally broken due to neglect or abuse. They have no job skills and they are often untrained in basic work ethic and self care. They see no greater purpose for their lives than day to day subsistence. The Home on the Range, ’Trail of Life’ and T.Y. Program addresses these issues. Young men come into the program thru local DHS, law enforcement referrals, and the street outreach center at the First Baptist Church in Portland. Young people, who have a heart to change their life, may then apply to enter this 8 to 12 month training internship, where they will be housed, fed, learn life skills, work ethic and be introduced to a greater purpose for their lives. The Yacolt house is set up to accommodate seven to twelve young people. The first two interns have just started in September. The program expects to add more soon. Following the program here, they may graduate to the "Home in the Suburbs". They will still live in a supervised group home, but closer to work or school in Vancouver, where they will have paying jobs in the community, or be enrolled full time in college. They receive program support from Dr. Mark Pelletier throughout. The next phase is a move into an independent living situation in an apartment where they will work and live in the community, still with program support as needed. Finally Transitional Youth will help them with a down payment on a home of their own. There will be a "grand opening" ribbon cutting ceremony on December 1st at 4:30 PM at the "Home on the Range" house 19600 NE Gabriel Rd, Yacolt. Yacolt Mayor, Joe Warren will officiate. Speakers will include Dr Mark Pelletier and Burt Waugh. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited to attend and learn more about this new partnership. Please call 360-686-8338 for more information.
