Steps

  1. Obtain Yarn in the color of your choice. One skein should be sufficient.
  2. Obtain a crochet hook the right size for your yarn weight.
  3. Begin to crochet in the round.
  4. Continue until the round is as large as the top of your head (or of the head you wish to cover...)
  5. Stop "increasing" the stitches slowly. Instead of two crochet per loop, do two crochet only every other loop for several rounds... until the round is of a size to slide comfortably over your skull (or the head of the person for whom you are crocheting.)
    • From this point, the number of rounds you crochet will determine the height of the hat.
  6. Crochet sufficient rounds to reach your ears. 3-4 should do.
  7. Test fit.
  8. Crochet a brim by increasing rounds again. Several consecutive increasing rows will yield a floppy brim, while increasing a few rows and then stopping the increase for a few more will yield a brim that will roll up slightly at the edges.

Tips

  • A large crochet hook will make looser crochet stitches and a floppier hat, while a smaller hook will make tighter crochet stitches and therefore a stiffer and warmer hat.

Things You Will Need

  • Yarn in your choice of colors. It is best to keep them all of the same weight, but one "can" mix thicknesses for a more interesting (and difficult to make) hat.
  • Crochet Hook
  • time.
