This home is built on a small lot in northeast Scottsdale, Ariz. The community includes 24 homes in a small gated enclave. The great room, master bedroom and one guest room all open onto the court with easy access. Three bedrooms, baths and the study have an adjacent ¾ bath as a spillover guest area. The fireplace and entertainment wall are visible from the court at night allowing each to act not only in its functional use but as view areas as well.

This home by Carlson Homes in Scottsdale, Ariz., is designed to nestle into the site. The overall use of curves and low roof heights settle the house and give comfort to residents. From a design standpoint an initial challenge was to create a home that would appeal to empty nesters or second-home residents by providing convenience, privacy and style. Site design and assuring that the lot would drain properly also were challenges as the lot has a slope of about 4 ft. from the street down to the house.

A courtyard plan was used to allow the entire entertainment area to be fenced in for easier maintenance. It also provides focus and privacy. Guests walk up to a large iron gate and enter the courtyard. A covered area for dining and shelter from the sun was created, and the barbecue area and outdoor fireplace are located on the perimeter wall. Also included is a "spool" (small pool that doubles as a spa) in the courtyard for a cooling dip in summer and a great spot to enjoy the spa in winter without taking up as much space as a pool.
