Originally published at Internet.comData Secure is a centrally managed encryption platform that provides protection for confidential data by encrypting it locally (at the local application). The platform is centrally managed in that the encryption keys are handled from a central component; including key generation, distribution, rotation, revocation, and deletion. The vendor states that the key manager can track an infinite number of keys across disparate platforms and systems; and includes alerting facilities for expired keys. Encryption/decryption can function even if the network goes down.
Data Secure is able to encrypt data at the file or field level, and offers support for multiple operating systems and databases. For OSs, the vendor lists Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, and now z/OS as supported (among others); while DB support is offered for IBM (DB2, IMS, VSAM), Oracle, and MS SQL. Multiple types of encryption are supported, including AES, Triple DES, Idea, RSA, and Diffie/Hellman.
The vendor notes that no file layout or field size changes are required to use the platform, and that the encryption process is carried out via background processes without requiring DB downtime.
For compliance and forensics purposes, audit logs and reporting features record activity details including the user and the time when encrypted data is accessed. The logs themselves are encrypted and hidden from casual examination, and both drill-down detail and dashboard summary information is available.
Other features include support for simultaneous key usage, role-based authorization, and the ability to decrypt restored data without storing the key on the same media as the data itself.
