Techkon SpectroDrive, which does automatic color and density measurement, is already a familiar site in hundreds of pressrooms. Frequently branded under OEM labels, it appears in systems from Ryobi, MAN Roland, DataColor and Sakurai. A U.S. distribution channel now provides more direct support.

Used to ensure consistent print-to-print color accuracy throughout a run, the system offers a new proprietary Scanheld technology that augments its adaptability and ergonomic performance. It is also speedy, scanning a 40´´ color bar on a typical press sheet in eight seconds. Scanheld technology allows scans to be performed wherever color bars are?page center or at the edge?with nothing required to hold the paper flat during the process.

As it reads it simultaneously sends the spectral measurement data wirelessly to a PC, where all relevant information for controlling runs is managed and displayed by its underlying ExPresso driver. A turnkey SpectroDrive can be used with any press type or format. The motorized reader unclicks from its track for spot reads around the sheet. This capability was augmented last month with launch of the enabling Scanheld software.

Ease of use, predictable short runs

The trend to smaller print jobs and shorter press runs makes time cost-critical?from starting a press to getting up to color and running with consistent quality. SpectroDrive helps reduce non-productive set-up time and paper/ink waste, opening more run time on press.

Printing jobs get more predictable and calculable as well. As customers demand documented run reports matching standards, SpectroDrive and its software utilities record and adhere to standards, for example ISO 12647.

Setting up a printing press is like starting a jet plane, says Techkon: a time-critical process where the operator?like a pilot?observes and performs a multitude of important tasks at the same time. So it engineered the ergonomics of the device to be easy to use and not to distract from running the press. An example: a one-button touch activates measurement and delivers run-data instantly and automatically. PC-driven software has an intuitive user interface, quickly operable by touchscreen. Installation takes a few minutes, then the system is operating and ready to take readings.

SpectroDrive's spectral software measures CMYK and spot colors, supports up to 16 print units, face and reverse printing, display of color density, dot gain, gray balance, L*a*b* values and presents recommendations on how to adjust the ink on the press. Measurement data can be exported into other software that connects real-time to enable closed-loop work.
