2. Basic Definitions

‘Aerial platform’ refers to a platform fixed on to an articulating or extendible support, designed to give personnel and their equipment and tools an elevated position at work locations. Vehicle-mounted aerial platforms, or bucket trucks refer to aerial platforms connected to articulating or extendible supports mounted on vehicles. The platform has the elevation controls while the vehicle operator controls mobile functions. The self-propelled elevated work platform, commonly referred to as the scissor lift refers to equipment with an inbuilt, movable power source as well as extendible supports attached to an aerial platform. Vertical elevation is made easy, although the platform cannot go past the equipment base. The operator stationed at the platform is in charge of all controls. Boom type elevating work platform, the boom lift is the next definition. It is very similar to the self-propelled elevated work platform, only that in this version, it is possible to position the aerial platform wholly beyond the equipment base.

3. Construction Equipment

Elevating work platform manufacturers and distributors play a vital role in industrial and commercial purposes. With the growth of the building industry, the demand for work platforms has grown rapidly as construction companies acquire these machines in order to facilitate construction. Accessibility via scaffoldings only has several limitations. The other advantage of such equipments is that it can withstand most weather conditions, allowing construction to continue in times of severe weather conditions. The latest models also have light systems that allow the worker the opportunity to work well into the night. Some of the mainstream features that these models have include electronically controlled lifting (hydraulic), easy controls, solid platform and a safety pan. Essentially, the lift mechanism depends on required usage. Hence the option between the inclined lift system and the vertical lift. In some cases, both systems are applicable.

4. Platform Specifications and Safety

For safety reasons, local authorities demand certain requirements. Open sides on the platforms must be fitted with intermediate guardrails, as well as toe boards. Another option is to enclose the entire platform forty-two inches high (or 107 centimeters). In addition to this, there must be guards to protect occupants adequately from the slightest contact with the elevating machinery. Signs that indicate safe working loads also give a great contribution to safety. In cases where manufacturers provide outriggers, they must be extended fully on a hard, firm surface throughout the use the elevated platform. With respect to the safety of the operators and occupants, it all starts with rigorous training. They must have the operation of devices used at their fingertips, knowing full well any inherent limitations. Trouble shooting and basic repair skills are vital. Certain practices lead to easily avoidable accidents. The most common of these is transporting workers using aerial platforms. At a personal level, platform occupants must wear safety belts at all times and in turn, these must be secured to safe anchorage points.
