Have fun with these ideas for enhancing the development and learning with your four year old.

  • Play simple board games so your child can learn how to follow rules and take turns. Engage in imaginary play with your child.
  • Play 'going shopping', 'going to the hairdressers' or a doctors visit.
  • Talk often about feelings: sad, happy, angry, and frustrated.
  • Because your child loves routine let them know ahead of time when any changes will occur.
  • Use descriptive words such as middle, top, above, or below.
  • Encourage your child to count in a variety of situations: measuring cups when cooking, scales in bathroom, or using calculators.
  • Create opportunities for your child to socialize with her peers.
  • Have crayons, pencils and paper available for your child.
  • Speak clearly to your child to assist in their language development.
  • Try to answer the endless stream of questions which four year olds always have - simple answers are usually enough.
  • Include your child in on planning for special events. This gives them time to practice how to plan and understand prioritizing.
  • Occasionally point out words as you read to your child. This will show them that some words occur quite frequently and they will become familiar with them in sentences.
  • Teach your child how to button and unbutton and encourage him/her to brush own hair and put away shoes and clothes.
