However, these diseases are still around especially in cases where immunizations have been incomplete. One such example is mumps.

What is it?

  • This communicable disease may affect all ages and usually inflames the salivary glands of the neck and jaws. This infection is also capable of causing a form of encephalitis as well as producing infertility, especially in males. Approximately 1 in 10 children will also develop meningitis.

What causes it?

  • Mumps is caused by a virus called Rubulavirus. The virus is spread through the air by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking

Possible symptoms

  • Swelling of the cheeks and jaw, which is caused by inflammation in the salivary glands
  • Fever
  • Headache

What is the treatment?

  • Mumps is preventable by keeping up to date with your child's immunizations
  • Give foods that are easy to swallow
  • Treat pain with analgesics such as ibuprofen and acephamines - remember NO ASPIRIN
  • Keep your child away from others for at least 9 days after the symptoms begin
