Your 4 month old is growing stronger and is becoming more aware of what is around him.

Motor Development

When you hold your baby he can now keep his back quite straight and hold his head nice and steady
  • He may start experimenting with shifting his weight from side to side. This could lead to flipping over!
  • Can begin to try sitting with support. Prop your baby up with some pillows so he can become familiar with this position and develop the muscles necessary to sit up
  • Your baby will love grabbing toys and putting them in his mouth. Make sure all toys are safe and not too small. Can now accurately track and follow objects with his eyes

Intellectual and language development

May start responding to hearing her name spoken
  • Will start imitating some sounds - particularly ones that are heard often
  • Locate where sounds are coming from
  • Your baby's senses are developing and she can now see in color, perceive depth and different distances
  • Intellectually your baby is really growing and can now sense strangers and unfamiliar places

Social and emotional development

Your baby is becoming more aware of emotions. She may cry if playtime is interrupted. Be aware that moods can change quite quickly at this age
  • He can now deliberately reach out with his arms for favorite toys and people
