Fujitsu announced today that it's taking notebook hard drives to an unprecedented new capacity level: 300GB.
The innovation at the heart of Fujitsu's upcoming MHX2300BT hard drive series is due to the use of perpendicular recording - a hard drive design technology that crams in more data per square inch than traditional longitudinal recording. That improvement is especially significant in a small form factor, like that of a notebook PC, with its 2.5-inch hard drive.
The new product series is slated to launch in the first quarter of 2007 with 250GB and 300GB models.
Fujitsu has been pushing hard on the notebook hard drive front for some time. Earlier this year, the company debuted a 200GB SATA notebook drive
The company said The drive line also features low power consumption of 1.6W, as well as quiet operation.
Perpendicular recording also has additional benefits aside from capacity alone. Because more bits can fit under the drive head as it rotates, the drives need to spin less
"Fujitsu remains at the forefront in promoting advanced technologies such as perpendicular recording and SATA, while at the same time continuing to meet the industry's insatiable demand for high-capacity products," said Joel Hagberg, vice president for marketing and business development at Fujitsu Computer Products of America.
