If an equation contains one or more variables and is valid for all replacement values of the variables for which both sides of the equation are defined, then the equation is known as an identity. 3. Try to express both sides of the identity in terms of only sines and cosines; then try to make both sides identical.

4. Try to apply the Pythagorean identities as much as possible.

5. Try to use factoring and combining of terms, multiplying one side of the identity by an expression that is equal to 1, squaring both sides of the identity, and other algebraic techniques to manipulate equations.
