Model IntroductionThe G3 Sun Catcher 208 Fish and Cruise is one of G3's entry-level Family Value Series pontoon boats. G3 also builds LX and LX3 (twin- and triple-pontoons, respectively) series of higher-priced boats""all are part of G3's Sun Catcher line. A great-looking boat, the 208 has all the basics for day cruising and light fishing. The test boat had a Yamaha 50-hp 4-stroke engine, which with a light load on the test ride pushed the boat to about 18 mph.
Construction
The G3 Family Value Series pontoons are built using U-shaped logs, which offers a couple of advantages over round logs usually used on pontoon boats. First, reserve and total buoyancy is greater, since the log's volume (which translates into weight-carrying ability) is maintained all the way to the top of the log, unlike a round log, which has less buoyancy with each inch of immersion past the center of the log. Second, the flat top of the U-shaped log serves as a naturally rigid structural platform for the cross members supporting the deck above.
The builder saves money, and can charge the buyer less, by using lighter construction than found on more expensive pontoons boats. The 23-in. diameter pontoon sections are built from .08 in. aluminum stock, and the nosecones, which are subject to impact from grounding, beaching and dock impact, are built using .1 in. aluminum. Given the speeds and overall service these boats will see, construction scantlings should be more than adequate. G3 also inserts styrofoam blocks inside the hulls, an important safety step to provide positive buoyancy in the event of hull puncture. Cross members are attached on 16-in. centers. Motor pods, bolted directly to the logs using 12 attachment points, provide a solid transom foundation for the outboard. The deck is 7-ply pressure-treated plywood. ...
