Do you feel like the major reason you're not more creative is because you just don't have enough good ideas? Or that you don't have enough ideas at all, good or otherwise!

Here's 3 steps to having all the creative ideas you'll ever need...

  1. Open your senses. The first step to having more ideas is to increase your awareness of everything around you. We each experience the world through our 5 senses, and at any one time, most or all of these are being stimulated in some way. Yet we often go about our daily routines as if we're wearing a deep sea diver's helmet. Filled with mud! A great way to start to tune into your senses again is to take yourself somewhere with a lot of external activity going on, then just sit and absorb what's all around you, focusing on just one sense at a time. Take a notebook and jot down what you're experiencing through your sense of sight, then your sense of smell, and so on. This increased openness to the stimuli around you will lead to a flood of new material for ideas.
  2. Capture the full essence of an idea. Next is to banish the myth that you never have any ideas. Ideas are forming, dissolving and reforming in your mind all the time. But if you don't capture them when they appear, you forget them as quickly as they came, and it feels like you never have any ideas in the first place. Carry a small notebook with you to record your ideas as soon as they appear. Be sure to capture the full essence of the idea, too. For example, don't just write down "story about girl with crayon," write something more like: "girl, blonde, pigtails, red dress, magic crayon, draws objects and feelings, magical adventures." Then when you return to the idea, you'll recall all the colour and vibrancy you had when the idea first appeared....
