2. Hand Embroidery Supplies and Equipment

Using the right embroidery supplies and equipment makes the great distinction between a person who finds needlework to be painstaking and another who derives great enjoyment in what they do and how they do it.

3. Introduction

Several hand embroidery equipments and supplies that people use to increase their efficiency and speed in various embroidery tasks exist. Some of the common ones include canvas or fabric, fibers or threads, scissors, scroll frames or hoops, stand or lap frame, lighting and magnification. Other equipment used in embroidery includes tape measures, rulers and storage systems for keeping beads and threads.

4. Embroidery Frame or Hoop

Other supplies and equipments used in embroidery include frames or hoops. Frames are used to hold the canvas or fabric and keep it tight when working on it. Frames or hoops can be of various kinds and materials such as wooden embroidery hoops or plastic no-slip hoops. Traditional hoops also referred to as tambour frames are each made of a pair of wooden rings, which are of different sizes. They form two rings the outer and inner rings. Wooden hoops should be made of quality wood, which has no splinters and is not likely to catch or tear the fabric. Plastic hoops are more expensive but keep the canvas or fabric taut, a factor, which is especially important for those involved in punch embroidery. It is important for one to have a variety of sizes when it comes to hoops to cater for small, medium, large and other sizes in between these three. A perfect example is having 4 inches for pieces that are small, 8 inches for embroidery, while a larger hoop can be used when one is involved in quilting embroidery.

Needlework frames are of many types. One example is scroll frames, which have been used traditionally for needlepoint or tapestry. These frames have wooden bottom and top roller bars that have been attached to webbing strips. They have sidepieces, which conveniently stretch the fabric. Scroll frames are available in different sizes. A person needs to be careful when buying these frames to ensure that the bars are of a wider size than the width of the fiber being worked on. Frames that are sturdy, neatly done and appealing are a better choice to ragged ones. Those who are able to buy frames that are more modern, save themselves the hassle of having to stitch the canvas to the wooden bars. These modern frames have slots located both in the bottom and in top bars.
