Relationships can be complicated. Any time you combine two different lives, you run the risk of unhealthy behaviors and habits impacting each other. If you want to have a healthy relationship, consider following these steps with your next partnership.

  1. Know you who are as an individual. Before you can partner with someone, it helps to know who you are. Be honest with yourself about your gifts and your hang-ups. You may have habits that will create an unhealthy relationship that you need to work on before you get involved with someone else. If you have tendencies to be self destructive such as addictions or you tend to make excuses, whine, push blame, guilt or sabotage the people around you, you need to work on you before you can have a healthy relationship with someone else.
  2. Have a life of your own. Once you know who you are remember to maintain some sort of life as an individual. Once you are part of a couple it's tempting to do everything together but your relationship needs you to have individual lives and pursuits in order to stay healthy.
  3. Get to know each other. While you might develop an interest and respect for someone within a few minutes of meeting them, you still should take the time to get to know who they are. Understand his likes and dislikes as well as his values. The value system we live by is much more important to the success of relationships than our favorite food or sports team. Talk about spirituality, faith, money and sex early and often. Being able to discuss these taboo topics as part of your relationship will help keep you on the same path. If you have differences of opinion about these issues you need to work them out before the tear you apart. Money and sex are the two most common causes of disagreements in relationships with faith and family coming soon after.
  4. Avoid destructive outside influences. Most women know or have at least one destructive friend or relative. This is the person who is miserable in their life and doesn't want anyone else to be happy. No matter what this person says to your face, if you listen hard you notice that she is trying to tear you down. This destructive influence does not care about what is best for you and will try to sabotage your healthy relationship. Get this influence out of your relationship and out of your life.
  5. Talk about anything and everything. Communication is essential to every healthy relationship. This does not mean you have to tell each other every minute detail of every day and every moment you spend apart. Communicating is about trusting that you can talk to the other person about what is bothering you, what makes you happy and what you are thinking. Talking helps establish and maintain the trust needed for a healthy relationship. Plus it should be fun to talk to your partner.
  6. Work continually. Healthy relationships require constant work. Be willing to work together and you can maintain your relationship.

Healthy relationships are the stabilizing force of a society. The bonds we create in our relationships teach us how to relate to the rest of the world. So create a healthy relationship by following these steps.
