Holiday Precautions

Author: Jessica Nielson

You may have heard in some news or seen in the television about natural calamaties that occured to some tourist destinations in the world. The Boxing Day Tsunami, hurricanes that struck the Gulf of Mexico, or the tsunami in Phuket, Thailand, to name a few. When traveling, you need make sure about the safety of your vacation by taking all necessary precautions. Some of the things you need to do is check the weather forecasts, get a proper insurance, and make sure that the hotel you're going to check in has proper emergency evacuation plans. Make sure also that you and your family understands the emergency procedures completely.

First off, get a good and reliable insurance policy. You can ask your travel agent about the policy that you should need to buy or if they have some policies offered. Make sure that your policy specifically cover your costs in case of a natural disaster occurence. When a bad weather is reported in time for your holiday trip, ask your travel agent for a refund because she can work better on it for you. As much as possible, get the hotel, airline, and even car rental payments reimbursed.

Talking to your travel agent and your embassy in the host country about the evacuation plans would be better also. Always equip yourself with important contact numbers like your embassy's phone number, your family, travel agent, nearest hospital, and the likes, so that you can get in touch with people immediately in case you need them.

In case that a natural disaster happens while you are already on your holiday vacation, immediately phone in your travel agent to get you a flight back and inform your embassy about your evacuation plans. They will be able to at least give you updated information and some necessary help. Don't even think of staying and witness the disaster that is happening because you might get yourself stranded in the country because of bad weather or bad infrastructure if you don't move fast.

Although there are some calamities that can't be predicted like volcanoes, tsunamis, or earthquakes, some calamities can be predicted, like snow storms and tornadoes. Best thing to do is avoid going into areas that are well known for bad weather at specific times of the year or areas that are prone to such calamities like areas near a volcano. You may also check the local history of the place to know some potential dangers. If that place has earthquakes, be sure to understand the hotel's evacuation plan in case the earthquake hits. If you are in an area that has volcanoes, check for yourself on how active they are.

Now don't get too paranoid as to checking all the histories of calamities of each of your potential destination. This is just to keep you aware that such natural disasters happen with no one to blame. So the best thing you can do is to prepare. Preparation and understanding the potential problems that may occur will help you and your family get out safely in case that a calamity occurs.
