Applying to private boarding schools takes planning and organization. You should become familiar with the requirements of all the private boarding schools to which you apply.

  1. Organization-Before you even begin to apply to private boarding schools, you'll need to create a folder that will hold all of the essential information necessary for application. This information should include the names and contact information for each school to which you are applying, admission packages from each school, letters of references in duplicate copies, grade transcripts, and any necessary entrance exam scores. Once you've compiled a folder with all of this information, you are ready to begin applying to private boarding schools.

  2. Admission Packets-The admissions department of each school will typically be responsible for mailing admission packets upon request. Be sure you allow plenty of time to request and receive these packets before you begin applying to private boarding schools. Admission packets generally include the following: student handbooks, school catalog, application forms, recommendation forms, request for secondary school aptitude test results, and lists of important dates, including application deadlines and admissions notification dates.

  3. Interview-The majority of private boarding schools require at least one interview as part of the application process. Typically, this interview is conducted on-site at the school campus. In some cases, however, the interview may be conducted in the applicant's area if the school is located a great distance away. This can generally be done only if an alumna lives in the applicant's area, although sometimes recruiters handle interviews in various areas of the country. Because you will need to visit the school, however, it is usually standard to schedule an interview at the time of your visit. The interview will allow the admission's officer to form an opinion of you, but it will also allow you the opportunity to form your opinions of the school to which you are applying.
