These days, children's lives are jam-packed with extracurricular activities. Soccer, dance, piano, football - you name it, some child is probably on their way to a practice or lesson for it right now. But with the demands of school and the pressures put on those applying for college, extracurricular activities can be too much for a child to handle. And for parents with several children, extracurricular activities seem to take over the family's evenings and weekends. If you're looking for ways to balance extracurricular activities, follow these steps below. Your children will thank you.

STEP 2:

Look for other options. Many families find the need to balance extracurricular activities in order to get their financial situations back in check. Extracurricular activities can be incredibly expensive, especially when each child has two or three to pay for. If you are looking to balance extracurricular activities in order to cut back on financial commitment, look for free clubs or teams that your child can join. Your child's school likely has an extensive extracurricular program. Getting your child involved in school activities will not only ease financial burden, it will usually ease up on the ‘taxi-mom' syndrome as well, since your child is already at school for after-school practices. You may even find that your local community centre offers programs like art classes or dance instruction that is already included in your annual membership. Take advantage of this!

STEP 3:

Have a realistic schedule. If you are still wracking your brain when it comes to getting all of your children to where they need to be on time, you're not alone. The important consideration is that you think of how the extracurricular commitment will impact you logistically on any given day. If you've got to have two kids on the opposite side of town at the same time on Wednesday, this likely won't work out well. Even if you've got a neighbor who is willing to drive your child to her extracurricular activity, you will inevitably miss out on your child's practices and games since you're with your other child. Be fair to your children and balance extracurricular activities so that they are only scheduled when you are able to go with them. If it happens to be an off-night for a sibling, it's a great opportunity to bring the whole family to support and encourage your child during her practice. Although it may take some rearranging, it is more than possible to balance extracurricular activities so that you can get your life back. Focus on activities that your child truly enjoys, lean toward less-expensive options whenever possible and work to have a schedule that works for everyone. Your children, your spouse and you will definitely be grateful for your efforts to balance extracurricular activities.
