So you want to be an architect. But how do you choose an architecture school that is right for you? Follow these steps to help you choose an architecture school that you'll be happy with.

STEP 2:

Look for accredited schools. At this point, you don't need to decide on just one single architecture school to apply to. But you do need to choose a few that make sense to look further into. The most important factor in choosing an architecture school is that it offers programs that are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). If you want to apply for your architect license after school, you must have a diploma from an accredited architecture school. Double-check that any school you are interested in meets this requirement.

STEP 3:

Find schools that meet your other requirements. As you sift through different architectural schools you may wish to apply to, you also need to consider whether these schools meet your personal needs or desires. For example, if you were thinking of studying abroad, see if your chosen schools offer this. As well, consider whether you would like to specialize in landscape, computers, interior design and so on, and look into whether these programs are offered as part of your course load. As well, schools come in all shapes and sizes, so select schools that have the class size you were hoping for, as well as the reputation, faculty, internships and location that you desire. All of these aspects are important to consider when you choose an architecture school.

STEP 4:

Visit a few schools. Before you make your decision on which architectural school to choose, it's a good idea to visit each school. All schools offer campus tours to hopeful applicants. During one of these tours, you will get a glimpse of the labs you'll be using, the technology available to you, as well as the layout of the campus. Usually, once you visit a school, you'll get a feel for whether or not it is the architecture school you want to choose.

STEP 5:

Apply. Even though you may have made your choice about which architecture school to choose, you will still need to apply for admission to the school. Your high school guidance counselor will help you through this process. Ensure that you complete all paperwork required of you, and pay the necessary fees. You should hear in the spring whether you got into the school of your choice. If you get accepted to a few schools that you applied to, weigh the pros and cons of each and then choose the architecture school that is the best fit for you.
