Steps

  1. Get any equipment that you will need first, such as calculator, ruler, pen, pencil, etc.
  2. Warm up your brain. Read a magazine, a chapter of a novel, listen to your favorite song, check your Facebook for new messages, comments, etc. Use this time wisely and don't IM your friends or slump on the couch. As tempting as it may be, your schoolwork needs to be finished and before you know it, it'll be over!
  3. Slowly read through your homework. This shouldn't take too long, but should be quietly without any distractions.
  4. Start your homework. When you get stuck, ask your parents or older siblings for help.
  5. While you are doing your work, you can listen to music. Try to listen to something soothing and don't have the volume up too loud. Remember that rap, rock and techno beats aren't going to help you finish, but choose something that you enjoy.

Tips

  • Do you want to know why watching TV ten minutes before homework actually works? While you are sitting watching the tube, your brain is actually working, taking in the audio and visual data.
  • If your History teacher gives you a time for when a documentary on the World War 1 or whatever is coming on, watch it. Videos are a much cooler, and easier, way to learn.
  • If you are writing an essay or a creative writing assignment, you actually get these done faster if you type it out on the computer. But focus on your work, not MySpace or iTunes. It's best just to stay off the Internet until all your work is done, unless you want to look up something that is related to the assignment.
  • You will never be able to work faster than when you work the night before something is due, but it's still not a good idea. The assignment will most likely be done very poorly and it will reflect in your grade.
  • Keep a bottle or glass of water nearby, as water helps you to concentrate.
  • Work in a quiet room, with no television, phone or computer and always have your phone switched off.
  • I find I can't concentrate on homework if I first get on the computer or do something else first. Try telling yourself that you are going to do your homework right after you get home, as you are walking home, or getting a ride home, or whatever.

Warnings

  • Do not become distracted by the TV. If you must, watch the rest of the episode. But do only homework after that.
  • Check you are satisfied with your work first. Make sure that it's an essay on WWI you've written, and not your latest blog that is on your profile.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Homework
  • Eraser
  • Ruler (if needed)
  • Computer (most use laptops to type things up)
