Small does not mean dull. Most patio designs, regardless of size can be a nice break from the indoors. Using a simple 10' x 10' space, you can have an area for sitting, entertaining, or even a water fountain.

STEP 2:

Sketch a rough plan. This will contain what you want in your patio. Mark in any features that you would like to keep in place and anything that is permanent.

STEP 3:

Lightly sketch out the existing patio. Determine what you would do if you added to it. Do you need to extend it? Would that affect any features you have in place, such as flowerbeds or the lawn?

STEP 4:

Mark the edges. Once you have an idea of where you want the extension to be, mark it using string to show the edges. This will give you a much better idea of the size of the patio once finished.

STEP 5:

Choose the material. Most people like the look of brick. It is durable and available in many colors. Install pavers. Patio pavers are inexpensive and easy to install. They are available in many shapes and sizes and are long lasting and durable. Patio contractors will clear a flat space and cover it evenly with sand then lay the brick pavers.

STEP 6:

Designs with flagstone. Flagstone is also available in many shapes and colors. If you select standard-sized flagstones, the installation is simple. Pay attention to location, to where the sun shines. If you want to have box gardens, or some grass, plant them in the areas that receive direct sunlight.

STEP 7:

Installing a fence. If you are installing a fence, remember to plan the fence height and location so it does not interfere.

STEP 8:

Waterfall styles. A waterfall will add to your environment and help you relax the day away. Running water masks most noises and creates a relaxing atmosphere. Make sure you read and follow the directions to install a waterfall. They can be tricky.

STEP 9:

Hidden nook for diner. There is nothing more pleasant than enjoying a meal on your patio, and the sound of murmuring water will complete this experience.

STEP 10:

Include tables and chairs. If possible, ensure your patio is large enough for a table and some chairs. If necessary, built-in planters with wide borders can offer a place to sit.Relax and enjoy the first meal on your new patio. You will have years of enjoyment as you relax with your plants, listening to your waterfall and planning your next patio experience.
