Steps

  1. Make sure you understand the basics from 'Learn Key Phrases in Dutch'. It's good to know things like 'Hello' and 'How are you' in a different language.
  2. Two main verbs in Dutch are 'zijn' (to be) and 'hebben' (to have).
  3. Zijn
  4. Ik ben (I am)
  5. Jij bent (you are)
  6. Hij is (he is - this also goes for 'zij' (she) and 'het' (it))
  7. Wij zijn (we are - this also goes for 'zij' plural (they) and 'jullie' (you) plural))
  8. Hebben
  9. Ik heb
  10. Jij hebt
  11. Hij heeft
  12. Wij zijn
  13. Now you know two main verbs. Let's go on with the following words:
  14. To be = zijn
  15. To have = hebben
  16. To want = willen
  17. Good = goed
  18. Bad = slecht
  19. Name = naam
  20. Brother = broer
  21. Sister = zus / zuster (zuster is common in Old Dutch)
  22. Father = vader
  23. Mother = moeder
  24. Grandparents = grootouders / opa en oma (which means 'grandpa and grandma', it's very common
  25. Music = muziek
  26. Book = boek
  27. Pen = pen
  28. Pencil = potlood
  29. Friend(male) = Vriend
  30. Friend(female) = Vriendin
  31. One = Één (you can say it like the A in the english ABC, and the with a N behind it.)
  32. Two = twee (the EE is the same like the één.)
  33. Three = drie. (the same as in English, but the Th you have to say like the D of 'D'arts)

Tips

  • Try conversations with yourself. Write them down.
  • You might meet Dutch people on MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online roleplaying games). It's a good idea to stop killing monsters for a second and talk to that person. It really helps to improve your Dutch.
  • If you're Dutch as well, write down more things on this page under 'Steps', which you think might be useful for foreigners.

Warnings

  • Don't learn any harmful things. A lot of Dutch children call eachother names, but you're most liked when you don't curse others. People will look at you as really tolerant.
  • BUT: others might think you're just a 'holy bean', (heilig boontje, which means something like '(plaster) saint')
  • Just be yourself when talking to Dutch. They will DEFINETLY notice if something's wrong or when you're showing off. This doesn't mean they don't show off themselves, though.
  • Be prepared to go nuts. Dutch are hard to understand.
