Steps

General Guidelines
  1. Change your perspective towards history. It is much easier to study a topic when you think of it as interesting. Some points that might help in this regard are:
    • Think of how useful history is. Not only does it show how the world has evolved through time but you can learn from the mistakes of the past to create a civilized earth where love , compassion, understanding, and knowledge are humanities goals not revenge and greed. Once you gain the knowledge of history the world is yours.
    • Think of how the world would have been if history did not exist.
    • Familiarize yourself with the different areas of study/branches in history.
  2. Watch history programs on TV. The History Channel has excellent programs that often re-enact historical battles or explore old technologies.
  3. Visit encyclopedic history related websites and read through some general topics that might be of interest.
  4. Visit historical landmarks, sites and museums. You can get to know history and still have some fun.
Studying Techniques
  1. Focus your studying efforts. Do not just start reading until you're tired. Try to be organized. Find some technique to approach the study of history that best suites your intellect. In other words, find a theme for your studying. Some start by studying personalities and historical figures and tie all other aspects to them. Some prefer places and locations.
  2. Summarize and record. rephrasing what you learned in your own words will make you better understand what you are studying.
  3. Be creative and use your talents. Studying history doesn't have to be all paper and pin. Try to use your talents and interests in studying history.
  4. Focus on the impact of historical events, not just on dates and people. How did the introduction of rifling change the outcome of battles.
  5. Think about what would be changed today if historical events were different. What if the US was better prepared at Pearl Harbor? What if both Lenin and Woodrow Wilson had lived longer and had met?
In-Exams Techniques
  1. Follow the general guidelines of taking tests. If the test is a hard one, there are also general guidelines for that.
  2. Estimate dates if you don't know them for sure
  3. Answer essay questions last if any exist.

Tips

  • Study through rote memorization. For example if you need to associate a person with a date just say the answer out loud several times.
  • Or many people remember names and events by associating them with something similar. Such as Abe Lincoln couldn't stop blinking...that's a stupid example but you get the idea.
  • Here's an easy way to remember dates:
    • Let's take a sample date: 1453- the year when the city of Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. Look at the first two figures in the date. In this case, 14- which tells us the century in which the event happened. Constantinople was conquered by the Ottomans in the 15th century- careful, the number of the century is almost always the number represented by the first two figures+1, unless the date ends in "00" (like in "1500"). The century helps us imagine the circumstances and the environment for the following event. Think about the state of the world at that time, at events that happened in that century, at the way people were thinking back then and at what political, social or religious factors determined the happening of that event. Correlate it with other events in other countries that were influenced by the given event.
    • Then, look at the third figure- which is 5, here. It tells us the decade in which the event happened. Know whether it was at the beginning, at the end or at the middle of that century. Here, the conquering of Constantinople was at the middle of the century. Think what happened immediately before the event, and immediately after it.
    • The fourth figure is the easiest to remember. Just read the date a few times, memorize it and then say it a few times out loud.
  • To memorize an event faster, write it down, dividing it into Causes (why did it happen), Development (how did it happen), and Consequences (what happened after the event had taken place).

Warnings

  • Just don't study a entire chapter a night before a test because it won't stick and even if it does you won't remember anything in the future.
